Popstars the rivals
Just watching the girls this week, don't think the overall quality is anywhere near as high that of the boys last week. They've changed the format, last week the boys were all doing backing vocals while each contestant sang but the girls are all solo, why - it is a *group* they're going to be in after all. Vocally for the first half, again my usual complaint - bland voices, not distinctive, only the young 16 year old Nicola caught my attention with a really gutsy go at River Deep, Mountain High and some glimmer of a spark of star quality, Nadine too has 'it' but I still can't warm to her for some reason, Cheryl has potential if she could lose the nerves, Lynsey comes across as the most relaxed if she would find the right song. I wish someone would tell me why Kimberly gets such praise - I just don't see it, very ordinary, Chloe annoys me in a Bonnie Langford kind of way - too much. Emma was out of tune, painfully so. Javine sang well but left me cold - where was the sensuality of Aretha's "Natural Woman"? I think Pete Waterman has been right in his summaries - they're mostly singing the wrong songs, picking tunes made famous from soloist divas, come off it, they're not going to top the originals. The song choices on Fame Academy also seem a bit poor, many with repetitive lyrics not giving much of a chance for interpretation. 8:02:42 PMXML to PDF? Oh, FOP It..
