Queen Mother: If you are unable to travel to London to pay your respects you might want to spend a quiet moment or two at
Live webcast from Westminster Hall, Lying in state [BBC]
At the moment  "Yeoman of the guard" aka beefeaters are doing their turn in guarding her during the vigil. "The Yeomen of the Guard (Valecti Garde Domini Regina) is the oldest continual bodyguard in existence. The Guard was formed in August 1485 by King Henry VII of England after the battle of Bosworth Field." [Yeoman.org] Her grandsons will eventually take part in the vigil.
Her funeral is on Tuesday at 10:30GMT/11:30BST at Westminster Abbey
Ceremonial funeral details released [BBC]
Pipers will lead the funeral procession when she is moved from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey. 10:52:10 PM

Dave's in tease mode again: "Google is working on a SOAP-based API. We've already verified that Frontier and Radio work with it. I'm not sure how much more I can say about this at this time."  [Scripting News]

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't care what it is but I like it already :-)

Westminster Hall open until 5am. It has been confirmed that Westminster Hall will stay open until 5am tomorrow as thousands queue to pay their respects to the Queen Mother. The lines stretch for two miles. [ITN Online6:47:42 PM

Realism May Be Taking the Fun Out of Games. One of the major goals of video game systems over the last two decades has been to create images so lifelike and movements so natural that there is no sense of artifice. By Edward Rothstein. [New York Times: Technology6:46:02 PM

Tartan Day - Live webcam via The Scotsman, ScottishPower "Tunes of Glory" from around 8pm BST [UK], 2pm EST [New York]
I'm watching right now but without sound, I've tried holding a conch shell and pointing it across the Atlantic but not a peep. Oh well at least they've published the official music used on the march: Green Hills of Tyrol, Battle's O'er, Lochanside, Farewell to the Creeks, Cock of North, Scotland the Brave, Ministrel Boy [Pipefest]

Can't help but think that the Queen Mother would have loved Tartan Day :-)

Tartan Day

"If they can skirl it there, they'll skirl it...anywhere...it's up to you New York, New York". America watch out. Today, 6th April  is Tartan Day. A parade of over 10,000 bagpipers is promised or rather threatened for a march today along the streets of New York. The march will also be joinedby Mr Scotland himself, Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor and Alan Cumming are also scheduled to participate. Don't say you weren't warned! 3:48:33 AM

Sliding Through Life on Charm

"I looked him straight in the eyes and said, very slowly and very clearly, "Sliding Through Life on Charm." I could see something happening in his eyes. He does look Robert Mitchum-like in a very skinny way..."  [Gadfly]
- Marianne Faithfull explaining how she asked Pulp's Jarvis Cocker to write her a song based on nothing more than a title. Make sure you read both parts of a great interview "The Curse of the Multiplying Mariannes", Part 1: The Scattered Selves, Part 2: Sex With Strangers By David Dalton 18th March 2002 [Gadfly]. Her "Kissin Time" album is really growing on me, wasn't that convinced on first hearing but it's really got me hooked now. I'm starting to hum tracks and can't get enough of "Sliding Through Life on Charm" - it's positively anthemic, you can very nearly picture a football terrace chanting along to it, hey when (if?) Partick Thistle get promoted it could be a great new theme song perhaps though with slightly cleaner lyrics than Marianne's...or maybe not ;-) The song is a defiant two fingers to rock-mythology makers. The kind of songs that make you want to say "Yeah, you tell them where to go!". 1:57:56 AM

Thousands file past coffin. "Members of the public are queuing in their thousands to pay their respects to the Queen Mother as she lies in state at Westminster Hall. Officials have decided to leave the hall open through the night until 6am to allow as many people as possible to file past the coffin." [ITN Online]
I was moved by the dignified pageantry surrounding the Queen Mother's procession to Westminster Hall and laying her coffin to rest where the vigil will be held. The ceremony didn't feel like it was bathed in the same hysterical intensity of disbelief and shock as with Diana but more a very clear public demonstration of just how important British society considered her life as Queen consort and Queen Mother to be. It was a nation saying "Thank you for your years of service to this country ma'am". You had to feel sorry in particular for Charles, losing a granny is a real wrench no matter who you are. The youngsters William and Harry also must have been reliving having to go through the trauma of Diana's death all over again. I really wonder what other countries on earth can put on a 'show' with such grandeur and yet still remain formal without being vulgar - maybe some of the communist states could outdo us in terms of numbers  and body counts but christ our *real* crown jewels, our ancient military, the centuries of historical precident. And the Queen? What a horrible start to her jubilee year. 1:05:19 AM

"My son was killed because of the occupation". Israel's Women in Black say the blood of their children is on Sharon's hands. [Salon.com]
Pacifist get very little media attention these days, there's also a Women in Black Scotland group and they have been holding vigils in Dundee and Edinburgh for many months. 12:51:59 AM
