I've now had time to play with the FreeTTS 1.1 system. I'm very impressed how easy it is to work with. The only niggle is that none of the Windows download batch files run correctly on my system so a wee bit of editing is required to run the demos. I'd wondered what the speed would be like and on a 800MHz machine it's more than adequately reading out seemlessly at a 'normal' words per minute setting. Remember this is running via Java rather than a native app. If you try running with Proprietry software like IBM's Via Voice - though good it is an extremely resource and processor intensive system - tends to slow down everything else on the machine while it's going. FreeTTS seems to put considerably less demands on the system. One of the FreeTTS prequisites is Java 1.4 - so this may be in part the reason for the 'better than expected' performance. There's even a client/server demo provided. I think what I'd like to look at is whether it's feasable for a web client rather than a desktop client to make use of a FreeTTS server. Ideally streaming audio but even creating downloadable .wavs would be very useful.
