Alain Baxter Guestbook:: "Brilliant run. Well done on the medal. And particularly well done on the Saltire. Scotland forever. Best wishes. Alex Salmond MP." [Alain Baxter9:52:15 PM

Fairly tickled to tune into CSPAN and catch the tail end of a speech "How the Scots Invented the Modern World" by Professor Arthur Henman he said "when you want to look for the monument for what Scots have contributed to the world...look around you". 5:02:25 AM

Another thorny challenge - get the W3C validator running on Windows. Of course it assumes Perl is being used but the Perl scripts call James Clark's SP parser. There are Windows binaries and I can get them to run standalone. The next step is to sort out the way they are called from the Perl script (they pipe input into them). Most of the file paths for the temporary files generated need to be changed for the Windows OS. My sticking point right now is how to get the script to send its input to the parser properly. The code's already there to do the passing in the W3 source code but this too fails on Windows. It's hard debugging systems when you're not sure how the code is *supposed* to work - all you have is lines of Perl - never the most 'reader friendly' language and a 'foreign' OS...what are the crucial differences in behaviour between the *nix version and an Apache server compared to IIS? Dig, dig, dig. 3:26:56 AM

Rats. I was trying to experiment with the XML-RPC server for ASP and made sure I upgraded the XML Parser but...the file xmlrpc.asp has a line
 Set objXML = Server.CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP")
This fails on Windows ME. I'm sure the system requirements for the parser said ME was supported but the Frequently Asked Questions about ServerXMLHTTP (Q290761) state

"...ServerXMLHTTP support is only available on computers that have Microsoft Windows 2000 installed or on computers that have Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 (or later) installed. It fails on other platforms, such as Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98. ...". So if it doesn't work for Win 98 - I guess it's not going to work for me on ME. Grrr! I guess I could try finding another parser and recoding - or there may be an equivalent but different function in the version 4 parser. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to have time to look into this further.

Where Scottish Women Curlers lead...others will follow: Briton wins Olympic bronze. Alain Baxter gave Great Britain its first ever Olympic medal on snow, grabbing a sensational bronze in the men's slalom at Deer Valley. [ITN Online]

Another Scot with an Olympic medal! Alain "Blue Rinse" Baxter. After all the stushie about his hair when he finished it was clear he still has a saltire etched in his hairdo but *all* his hair is blue so if it's a blue cross it can't be a 'political statement' can it ;-)

Hey it looks like we might be getting the knack of this 'doing well' business, rather than playing our traditional role of "performed well...but..." or ever the gallant, plucky losers. Nice to be on the medal podiums at last. Well done to "The Highlander" Alain, there'll be partying in Aviemore tonight! A huge boost for our native ski-ing industry - the revenues of which (including tourists who book packages where skiing is just a part of their visit) are vital to sustaining the economies of some of our most rural communities, especially in my mother's neck of the woods - Tomintoul, developments on the Lecht/Cairngorms provide much needed employment to locals and the tourist industry.
