Patrick Lioi. Patrick Lioi: "Following the weblogs.com approach, they could expose a sort of ping mechanism so that every time you update your site, Google is notified of a change and can instantly crawl and index the changes." ... [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]

Google sort of does this already, almost, och well not really but kind of :-) ...I've found from blogging that if you update a web page *regularly* then the Google crawler will visit your page more or less daily looking for changes. That's why news sites like the BBCs always rank highly in Google results compared to issue based sites. That's  also why the traffic to Scottish Lass has exploded this week (No. 1!)  - referers from Google looking for Pop Idol info, I only created a Pop Idol category on this site just over a week ago in response to what I was seeing coming through on the referers, from there traffic just whooshed. Normally you'd have to wait till the end of the month before the pages would show up on Google. So wait til the end of this month and you'll see a deluge of other Pop Idol sites turn up that weren't lucky enough to be indexed on the last cycle. You know you've got onto the quick update list when a date is listed next to your Google results for your site. Yes the weblogs approach would be really nice, 'perfect' but daily updates are a good compromise considering the scaling issues. As a web old timer I really miss the days when you could go to infoseek, add url your site, it would be spidered there and then and would show up within an hour or so which is pretty close to what Patrick is yearning for, it *used* to exist, it *can* be done. So what we want is to go back to those halcyon days before evil spammers screwed us all. I'm a wee bit concerned that Scottish Lass is doing rather *too well*. At this rate I'm probably at risk of having my account suspended for using up my bandwidth allocation for the month, so I'm stripping down the blog to just one day display and crossing my fingers that traffic will start to calm down.
