"Software publishers attacks BBC education 'stranglehold'. Choice for Schools" [The Register]
As someone who earns her living from developing software/online products for schools I can understand their argument...but I don't agree. Education is such a *vast* market. No matter how good the BBCs content there's always going to be room for many vendors, no we're not all going to have access to BBC-like 'free' advertising. But quality products will always find their audience. Last year I attended the SETT Show 2001 and was absolutely amazed at the number of vendors offering content and classroom products. There are plenty of niches. Business is *booming*. More Flash widgets than you could shake a stick at and from the sound of things many more on the way. Broadband really can't come quickly enough for Scottish schools. Channel 4 is also a big player in interactive learning, they've been quietly putting together many UK tailored resources - they tend to outsource the technical work but support by way of intellectual property and promotion. Witness Channel 4 - Modern Languages as an example - went down a storm at BETT.
