"Wired News: Speaking of Voice Recognition. If companies like Microsoft, Intel and Cisco have their way, future cellular phones, PDAs and television sets won't come with any buttons. Instead, people will navigate using their own voices --twangs, impediments, accents and all." [Tomalak's Realm]
Funny you should say that. I'm seriously impressed with VoiceXML. I signed up for a Motorola Developer account to get access to their Mobile ADK for voice and have been dabbling. I was impressed enough when the app spoke to me dynamically in response to typed responses but gobsmacked when *talking* a response via a microphone worked first time. Cool! What I hadn't realised is that voice gateways used in e.g. phone systems actually have a very high accuracy rate, if you think about it e.g. dictating with something like ViaVoice the computer is trying to make sense of your speech in terms of the entire English language but if it's a voice app like a menu with only 5 responses then the computer only needs to figure out if what's been said matches one of those menu options - a far easier and less error-prone task. 12:26:40 AM
