"Phone call from doomed passenger. A woman locked in the toilet of the hijacked plane used in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon phoned her husband seconds before it crashed. Barbara Olson, a CNN commentator whose husband Theodore Olson, known as Ted, is the American solicitor-general, frantically called from her mobile phone to say her plane had been hijacked" [ITN Online]
No matter how many times we see the video footage it still seems 'unreal'. Jeff Greenfield CNN was saying to an american audience "Tomorrow we will wake up in a different country". So many human tragedies - I was very sorry to hear about Barbara Olson's fate - she was a frequent commentator on CNN especially during the Clinton Impeachment/OJ Simpson/Gary Condit - how ghastly for her husband to have that phonecall and how astonishing that even in her dire state she was acting as a newsperson, passing back information that may ultimately help to explain what's been happening. For all America's trillions spent on defence how sickening that so few people can can have such a devastating effect and change the course of history. Another one of those "Do you remember where you were..." days. I was visiting our office in Dundee and during some training someone commented that planes had crashed into the tower - we were all assuming it was small private planes - an accident, then we noticed we couldn't access external sites on the internet - now we know why. Then seeing the tower just vanish (We saw a TV at the stage where the first one had collapsed) then the news about the Pentagon, we were disturbed but maybe thinking - are they going to target this country too. It's the confusion and loss - too much to absorb - the next few days and weeks will be even worse when the enormity hits home. 2:32:45 AM
